Private Members Bills

"The ballot for Private Members' Bills in the House of Commons will take place in Committee Room 10 on Thursday 15 November at 10am. The Bills of those Members successful in the ballot will be formally presented in the House of Commons on Wednesday 5 December."

At the start of every session a ballot is conducted, and some lucky backbench MPs get an opportunity to introduce a bill of their choice, and some parliamentary time on specified Fridays. Some MPs will enter the ballot with a specific bill in mind - probably most will not. If they win one of the coveted slots there will be plenty of campaigners who will urge them to take up a particular bill. A few bills may make it past all the obstacles that can be put up - because time is limited private members bills are susceptible to being 'talked out' - to become law.
